Jiu Jitsu and how to progress faster
Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and types of training to progress faster:
When we start learning Brazilian jiu jitsu we feel a big gap between what we have been taught in class and the possibility of using those techniques during sparring.
It is true that starting with some kind of Fundamentals Program helps to minimize this feeling and frustration but it does not reduce it completely.
This is due to the large number of areas that make up the Brazilian jiu jitsu game and the difficulty of being able to quickly learn all the techniques and resources necessary to fight efficiently.
The reality is that in the first few months we spent a lot of time in disadvantageous positions, trying to escape from them and defending the opponent's attacks.
One thing that will help you get through this phase of initial frustration and lag is to understand that there are different types of training and that each will help you in a different way.
Understanding that they are all useful and that it is best to combine them and dedicate time to each of them, especially on free practice days will help you learn faster by working on the problems you have and improving consistently.
You must take into account that in regular classes, in the better scenario, the teacher will follow some technique planning system and that in general this system is not focused on the needs of those who are starting out.
For this reason, it is very important that you organize your free training sessions taking advantage of the different modalities of practice and not just come to the gym to do more sparriing.
Read and learn about forms of training and organize your free training to implement them and work with these methodologies.
Some of the most used are the following:
- Planned training following a game plan.
- Drilling
- Laboratory work.
- The positional sparring.
The process to plan your free Brazilian jiu jitsu training.
First, try to recognize what problems and difficulties you have and find solutions for them.
Secondly, based on that, organize a calendar and define objectives, the time you will be working in each area as well as an improvement criteria.
Finally, take this calendar into account, plan each free training session and make the most of the different ways of training mentioned above to improve the areas that interest you the most.
On the other hand, don't forget to dedicate part of the time to working on problem areas and other part to learning techniques and positions that help you build your Game Plan.
In the article "On the relevance of game plans in learning Brazilian jiu jitsu" we explained in more detail how to use this methodology. (In Spanish but you can translate it using the blog translator buton "Translate the Blog" in the side bar when you land in the blog)
In the article "Jiu Jitsu: on the importance of free training" we explain the different training methods that we mentioned above and what each one brings you to accelerate your learning process and evolution in jiu jitsu.
