About the ways to surrender in a Brazilian jiu jitsu fight

Although it may seem obvious to those who have been in Brazilian jiu jitsu for some time, for those who are starting out it is not so easy to find a way to express that we give up due to a submission, danger of injury or simply due to fatigue or overwhelm.

For this reason, it is important to know how to express that you give up in a Brazilian jiu jitsu fight.

Possibly the most used way is to hit lightly, with the palm of the hand on some part of the opponent's torso or on his arms.

The second way can be to kick against the ground in case both of our arms are blocked.

And the third and surely the most efficient is to express it verbally saying "Tap".

As we said initially, it is very important to recognize that many times we must indicate that we want to stop the fight not only because we are caught in a submission but also to communicate that a finger has been trapped, that we are going to fall badly or that we are going to fall on top of someone else.

Finally, it is also important that you know if you are starting out that there are many submissions in Brazilian jiu jitsu that do not cause pain until a tear of muscles, ligaments or other structures occurs: this is the case of the knee, arm and mata leon for instance.

In these cases, the hyperextension in place does not hurt until the moment of the breaking, that's why it is important  to communicate that we want to stop the fight at the moment we see that we cannot get out of the submission.

Another very important issue is what happens in the case of strangulations.

In most cases in Brazilian jiu jitsu, they are blood flow cutting and affect blood flow to the brain, so they don't  cause pain or shortness of breath as is commonly thought.

That is why it is also very important to know that you can become unconscious in a few seconds if you persist in getting out of a well-engaged strangulation and that the correct thing to do is to express that you surrender verbally or with your hand.
